À rebours, suckers!

Bonne anniversaire to one of my favorite authors, J. K. Huysmans. Wait. Is that Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless? Flash! Aaah! I hope I look that diabolically intellectual when I'm an old fucker. Assuming of course that we haven't all been melted into glass by the 'more wars and less jobs' of Emperor McCain.

Besides my general blogging laziness and a distinct lack of desire to pen a Not-All-That-Super Tuesday round-up -- trust me, someone somewhere is going to, and with far more zesty goodness than I or even Wolf himself could ever hope to muster -- I do have an additional ulterior motive skulking in the shadows of this post. UK publisher Dedalus Books has put out the works of Huysmans and those of others for nearly a quarter of a century, whether semi-known, not-known-enough or of a thoroughly modern cast. The Arts Council has decided to pull their funding, no doubt justified by some pro-capitalist legalese.

Thus, I ruthlessly demand - hey, works for the moneyed fuckers, so why not here? - that you, at the very least, sign this petition pledging your undying love. I hope that if any of the stuff these folks put out seems intriguing, that you'll bust out the plastic and support an independent publisher. If it's not your thing, at least spread the word. I can't be the only weirdo that you know.

Sadly, I do not know this author. What is your favourite work of his?

À rebours is probably his most famous work, and it's pretty goddamn good, but I dig Là-Bas the most I'd say. Can't go wrong with a mélange of weirdo love, Satanism and some Gilles de Rais tossed in for good measure.

Totally lost on this one. I will say thanks for not writing about yesterday. I'm all politic-ed out. I'm tired of hearing numbers and percentages. I need a timeout.

POP, I can't say whether he is or isn't right up your alley, but take the day off and read something. I already called your boss, so it's cool.

I'm with you on the politics. I just want to know whether we're going to get four years of adequacy or eight more years of lunatic warmongering. Adjust liquor cabinet accordingly.

I have signed the petition. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Weirdo.

liberality, thanks, I think it's good to support the mom and pop stores of the publishing world.

candace, thanks, and thanks. ;-)

Dear Randal,

Like Colleen, I am sadly ignorant of this author, although I've heard of his name. Thanks for the heads-up! I've signed the petition and hope that it will do some good.

And I'm with you on the torrent of political discussions. I signed on to my Google Reader yesterday -- after not having done so for two days -- and found over 300 feeds to be read. No, I didn't read most of them. All I cared about was, Who won California?

I love indie publishers. Have you read any of Poets & Writers magazine? They're positively orgasmic about them. Love Soft Skull Press.

Also, B. just alerted me to another publisher of note: Twelve Publishers.

Will you sign my petition asking Sony to release the remaining seasons of The Nanny on DVD? Seriously, it's been to freakin' long since Season 2 was released.

Salut,
Marjorie

I'd only seen him in Flash! Aaahh! He's for every one of us!

So awesome of you to quote that underrated classic.

marjorie, politics is a strange thing to me. Essentially, I loathe them, yet because of their ubiquitousness, I feel compelled to pay attention.

Oh yeah, I've perused a few issues of that one. Soft Skull Press? That's a wonderful name, I'll have to check them out.

Yikes, The Nanny? Well, okay, but only because you signed my petition. Fair is fair. ;-)

dguzman, I was so happy when that damn thing finally came out on DVD so I could stop trying to explain its cheesy goodness to my kids and let them see it for themselves. Holy shit, it's nearly 30 years since that movie came out.

Merci, Randal. Maybe Sony will get off its butt and finally release the darn collection.

Salut,
Marjorie

Randal, I just signed the petition. I think independent publishers are so important, especially with the way all of our information sources are being taken over by conglomerates and we are only getting exposed to the music and literature the establishment wants us to.
