Listen to that funky music, white boy

After whining like Ted Stevens in the halls of Congress making a legitimate inquiry into why I hadn't been tagged by a certain person on a music -- music! -- meme, I was thrilled to see that said certain person corrected her egregious, but no doubt honest *cough* error.

En plus, it works out for the best because all I have to do is a minimum amount of work without bitching about politics because, frankly, I'd rather not punch holes in the monitor where I'd not simply slice my hand up, tearing tendons and ligaments and thereby derailing my burgeoning career as a major-league fireballer, but get contaminated by some rare chemical whose danger has been vastly underreported in the press. And if I croak, how could I do my beloved posts on the Browns?

Anyway, according to the rules, we're supposed to list our 25 favorite tracks on our mp3 player. I love lists, but narrowing down anything music related to a mere 25 is like someone asking me to choose between my kids. Both of them piss me off with equal verve.

Therefore, I decided to list the last 25 tracks that I've played. Given that I'm more of an album dude than a songmeister, that won't work either, so you get the last 25 albums I've played from the most recent to those last heard many aeons ago (last week).

Metallica, Death Magnetic
Opeth, Blackwater Park
Opeth, Still Life
Opeth, Watershed
Katatonia, The Great Cold Distance
High on Fire, Blessed Black Wings
The White Stripes, Elephant
Philippe Graffin and Pascal Devoyon, Joseph Canteloube/Pierre de Breville: violin sonatas
Corrosion of Conformity, Wiseblood
Celtic Frost, Morbid Tales
Faith No More, Angel Dust
High on Fire, Surrounded by Thieves
Wolves in the Throne Room, Two Hunters
Weakling, Dead as Dreams
David Oistrakh, Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin concerto and romances
The Florestan Trio, Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano trios, volume one
Metallica, ...And Justice For All
Metallica, Ride the Lightning
Van Halen, Fair Warning
Sir Neville Marriner, conductor, Johannes Brahms: symphonies 3 and 4
Daniele Gatti, conductor, Piotr Tchaikovsky: symphony 5/Romeo and Juliet overture
Daniele Gatti, conductor, Piotr Tchaikovsky: symphony 4/Capriccio Italien
The White Stripes, Icky Thump
Voltaire, The Devil's Bris
Josep Pons, conductor, Georges Bizet: L'arlésienne suites/Symphony in C

Alright, suckers, 25 favorites, 25 last, 25 albums, I don't care. Here's a golden opportunity to not post about McFossil and/or Mooselini. Don't be a fool and pass it up!

Now it's my turn to whine, WHY WASN'T I PICKED! Actually it's o.k., I don't have an MP3 player. But I could fake it.

P.S. White Stripes, early Metallica, nice picks.

I only listen to church hymns, so all that stuff you put up, I've never heard before. Give me a good Gregorian chant to dance to and I'm a happy nun. ;-)

If you play any of that music backwards, it turns you into a Republican. If already a Republican and you play it backwards, you end up shooting your lawyer in some duck blind.

I will say it is an interesting collection. Why no Iggy Pop though? He hails from your parts doesn't he?

Delibes, "Maria" would make my list as would most of White Stripes. Metallica, maybe not. Some songs but not any album. Their live album "S&M" recorded with a symphony in LA was excellent though. That's one concert I would have loved to attend.

I'm so much of a Luddite --

How much of a Luddite is he --

I'm so much of a Luddite, I don't even have an MP3 player or an iPod or any of them other newfangled contraptions.

Interesting list. My top 25 (CD tracks that is) would probably be about the same ratio of heavy metal; less classical and more jazz and ethnic (Indian and Bulgarian for 2 examples) sounds.

übermilf, shhh! That's supposed to be our secret!

diva, yes, yes I am. And for showing such pluck in the face of an authority figure, you should quadruple my salary.

frederick, I've got iTunes on my computer at work, but I still use my trusty discman on the bus. You should do it anyway!

ME, hey, I've got a few discs of that stuff. Ensemble Gilles Binchois do some good Jesusery. ;-)

mrmacrum, but what music is out there that, if played backwards, gets Republicans to move to a deserted island in the middle of the Pacific, forever shunning the rest of humanity until they all die off?

S&M? Really? I thought they missed a major opportunity by using Kaman. You had all these evil, minor key riffs, and it sounded like he was tossing cheery Mozart over it. That album should have been more evil, IMO.

tom, you should run for president! No, wait, you know how to send a computer letter. Nevermind.

Picking 25 single tracks out of the thousands we've all heard is impossible, simply because moods change so often.

What's that Bulgarian stuff like? I've always dug it when folks like Dvorak and Bartok used or invented native folk melodies in their stuff.

Sweet Jesus what an eclectic listing of music Randall!

I listen to old music..blues, rocknroll and occasionally some classical musak..

Okay, I'd doing it but just one question----

What's an ipod? Sounds like a biological term.

Randal Graves said...

dusty, I'll give nearly anything a shot save rap and country.

Please tell me you mean music and not musak.

dean, oh, the iPod was a dinosaurus that was killed during The Great Flood.

This is scary, Metallica is the only group on that list I know. Guess our musical tastes are different! (Although I do like the classical stuff).

You really are a bastard, aren't you. This musical virus will certainly take it's toll. And just so you know, I think you should have had to link every one of those tunes. Not just a bastard, but a lazy bastard as well.
